Mr. Scott died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, in Willamette Valley Medical Center, victim of complications of Alzheimer's disease. He was 81.
Born Aug. 30, 1923, in Gordon, Neb., he was the son of George and Clarice Scott. When he was young, they moved first to Wounded Knee, S.D., then to Deer Park, Wash.
After high school, he joined the Army, serving in the Pacific Islands during World War II. His was one of the first units to enter Japan during the occupation. Upon discharge, he moved to a rural area near McMinnville, where he resided ever since.
In 1949, he married Annetta "Ann" Haugen in Sheridan. He worked in a plywood plant in Willamina for many years, then at the Purina plant in McMinnville until his retirement.
Mr. Scott was involved in the formation of McMinnville's Plan Loving Adoptions Now, known as PLAN; the West Valley Academy, a school for at-risk youth; and Mid-Valley Rehabilitation, which trains, places and employs workers with disabilities.
His efforts grew out of a desire to assist children, particularly those with disabilities. He cared for and sometimes adopted many children himself.
He grew beautiful flowers and kept a meticulous landscape, and enjoyed sharing both. He was a faithful member of the Willamina Free Methodist Church, where he was involved with a very large group of children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven sons, Mark Scott and James Hyunh of Portland, John Le of Lebanon, Jeremy Scott of Bend, Joseph Scott of Louisville, Ky., Paul Scott of the Guantanamo Bay Naval Station in Cuba, and Aaron Scott of McMinnville; 11 daughters, Sandi Wilbanks, Phyllis Scott, Cynthia Murphy, Angela Anderson and Christina Scott, all of McMinnville, April Mahurin and Cammi Lucas of Salem, Susan Deeter-Scott and Marcia Scott of Portland, Amanda Scott of Bernalillo, N.M., and Lisa Brown of Sheridan; one sister, Geneva Smith of Tacoma, Wash.; two brothers, Vern Scott of Sisters and Harold Scott of Independence; 22 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters.
