He graduated from Texas A&M University with a masters degree in agricultural engineer and served in the US Navy. He married Sarah Martinez married on December 20, 1956. He married Sharon Toomey on October 6, 2000, in Independence, Kansas. Survivors include his second wife, his children, Ruth Jürgen, Mark Miller, and Leah Mosley, and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife and his parents. Memorial services were held at First Southern Baptist Church in Coffeyville. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence.
