Sister Margaret Ann Mason, FSPA
Sister Margaret Ann Mason, Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration, 92, died of natural causes Friday, May 29, 2020, at Villa St. Joseph, La Crosse. She was in the 72nd year of her religious profession.
Sister Margaret Ann was born April 4, 1928, to Carl and Josephine (Rogalski) Mason in Ashland, Wis. She entered St. Rose Convent in 1945 and made first profession of vows Aug. 12, 1948. Sister Margaret Ann ministered as an elementary school teacher for 47 years throughout Wisconsin, (Eau Galle, Mondovi, Milford, Odanah, Ashland, Eau Claire, Edgar, Athens, Superior and Ashland), as well as Blackfoot, Idaho, and Milford, Iowa. She started out in the primary grades and quickly moved to middle and junior high, eventually serving as principal for seven years, while at Holy Family School, Ashland and Sacred Heart School, Eau Claire. Sister Margaret Ann was involved in school consolidations both in Ashland and Eau Claire. From 1986 to 1989, Sister Margaret Ann served as Director of Development of Catholic Schools for the Superior Diocese. She received a bachelor's degree in home economics and English from Viterbo College (University), La Crosse and additional studies at Marquette University, Milwaukee. In 1998, Sister Margaret Ann officially retired from teaching, but continued to volunteer at the parish and school at Our Lady of the Lake, in Ashland. In 2010, Sister Margaret Ann retired to Villa St. Joseph, La Crosse, where she continued to volunteer until her health weakened.
Sister Margaret Ann is survived by her religious community; a brother, Eugene Mason, St. Paul, Minn.; her sister-in-law, Jean Boyer, Sun City, Ariz.; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Thomas.
Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Margaret Ann will be scheduled at a later date. A small burial rite will be held Tuesday, June 2, at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, in accord with COVID-19 restrictions. Dickinson Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.
