Star of St. Louis TV show, "The Charlotte Peters Show," mother of cartoonist Mike Peters ("Mother Goose & Grimm"). Charlotte Peters was a St. Louis housewife and mother when, in 1947, she answered an ad for a talent contest at KSD-TV; new performers were being recruited for To The Ladies, the station's live noontime variety show. Showing up late, she sat down with the director and, after a song or two, was hired on the spot. She was immediately popular, and subsequent roles in live theater enabled her to hone her comedic skills; thus, when the original host of To The Ladies left the show in 1954, the spot was offered to Charlotte. To The Ladies became The Charlotte Peters Show. During her years on the air, Charlotte was one of the most visible people in St. Louis, beloved by her audience and her sponsors, and was a powerful ally of local charities. She became known for her willingness to try anything, particularly if it meant getting a laugh. Much of each hour was unscripted; the unpredictability of live television, and the ability of the performers (and frequently audience members) to roll with it, became one of the program's chief assets. The show remained on KSD-TV until the early sixties, when a dispute with station management prompted Charlotte (along with three-fourths of her sponsors) to move to rival KTVI-TV. The show ran for nearly another decade in its new home; the final show, still a live broadcast, was in July of 1970. With the variety show format waning in popularity, Charlotte returned to roles in live theater and began writing for the newspaper. In the late seventies, her family opened a successful restaurant, "Charlotte's Rib", which is still in business.
