Richard (Dick) Lyons, 66, of the Greeley area, Colorado, passed away peacefully with family by his side on April 8, 2020 after fighting lung cancer for 5 months.
Left with decades of fond and colorful memories for Richard are his daughter, Jenifir (Ken) Kramer and 2 grandsons, Dawson & Kian Kramer; stepson Jason Lindgren: Siblings: Susan Lyons and 2 sons, Adam Yoder and daughter, Abigail, and Aric Yoder; nephews Daniel and David Lyons; nephew Michael Lyons, including niece and nephew Katrina and Samuel Betts; Betsy Lyons and 4 daughters, Hannah and Sirah Masters and Reina and Iris Gifford; John (Inna) Lyons and daughter Caroline and son Alexander, step-children Yura and Alisa; Sam Lyons; Bill Lyons; and Amy (Bryan) Klyse and son Ivan and daughter Bela. He is also survived by three cousins (Charles, Birch and Robert) and their families, cousins Art and Ann, and six cousins (Nolan, Cathy, Paul, Maureen, Martin and Ida) and their families. Family was everything to him.
Richard was a part of the communities of Eaton, Galeton, Gill, and Greeley but grew up in Rocky Ford, Colorado, keeping in contact with many of his classmates and friends of the family. He began working with bricks and stones early in life and built many wonderful structures for friends, family, individuals and corporate entities, in many Colorado communities. From pizza and bread ovens, to patios, to entire homes, to chimney repair, to historic restoration, he was an old-world craftsman. Of note and much fun for him was the restored marker on Trail Ridge Road the “Welcome to Durango” marker, and the overlook barrier on Lizard Head Pass. Self-employed and self-sufficient, his intense work and play ethic enriched all who came in contact with him.
Richard's enjoyed many interests keenly, including coaching girls’ softball. He was driven by wanting to spend as much time with his daughter as possible and grandsons when they arrived on the scene, camping with family and friends, hunting, and fishing, wherever and whenever possible. Everyone with Richard, was trained in gun safety and respect for nature. He never hunted without his faithful canine companions, and then shared many exotic types of jerky for decades. He was also a modern day bard. He knew hundreds of songs and could pick out a melody by ear or make one up on the spot. Well-read with many interests, he had much knowledge to share with everyone about everything. He loved his country, poker, coins, sports, taking photos, writing, poetry and oh, so much more.
In every activity Richard drew in brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, grandsons, friends, children of friends. He valued the wisdom of his elders and felt honor-bound to pass that on to the younger generations. To those overwhelmed with large families, he was an ambassador and made them feel most welcome. His frugality, economy, and ingenuity were the stuff of legends. Many will remember him as a man who loved to share jokes and loved talking more than breathing. He was against onions, laziness, disloyalty, and mean-spiritedness. Through of all life’s curveballs, Richard maintained his arc of smiles, empathy, looking beyond himself, even to the very end. He was devastated to be another statistic of medical bankruptcy but died rich in and love and friendships.
He was preceded in death by his parents (Dr. Daniel J. and Eleanor Unfug Lyons) and 2 brothers (Daniel Jr. (D.J.) & Michael Wesley Lyons).
