Melvin Douglas Hill, known best as Dickie, passed away Sunday morning, May 24, 2020 at his residence. A native of Greene County, Dickie was born December 29, 1947, the son of Drew and Martha Hill.

Dickie pioneered emergency services in Greene County during his tenured career that included serving as the county’s Coroner, Fire Marshall, Arson Investigator and Director of Emergency Services. It was under his leadership and guidance that Greene County established fulltime county EMS service and implemented the 911 addressing system. He retired in 2005 leaving the legacy of a true public servant and having dedicated much of his life to providing better services to the citizens of Greene County.

Dickie is survived by his wife, Tootsie Taylor Hill; daughter, Wendy Hill Ellis and husband Randy of Fountain; sons, Dana Douglas Hill and wife Valerie, and David Bruce Hill and wife Tammy, all of Snow Hill; grandchildren, Taylor Hill, Kaylee Hill, Austin Hill, Morgan Hill, and Jake Ellis and wife Cassie; a great-grandchild, Morgan Ellis; a sister, Ellen Hill Cannon of Farmville; sister-in-law, Rose Hoffman of Kinston; nieces, Elaine Ginn, Samantha King, Sonya Langston, Joanna Langston and Cindy Hawley; and nephew, James Albritton.
