Floyd Melvin Stevens
May 28, 1929 - May 15, 2020
Major Floyd Melvin Stevens was born May 28th, 1929 in Scott County, IL. He was raised on a farm with 8 brothers and sisters and joined the United States Army Air Corps when he was 17 years old. While serving in the military, he received the National Defense Service Metal; Bronze Star; Expert Infantry, Rifle, Machine Gun and Mortar; Parachutist’s Jump Wings; Ranger Tab and WWII Victory Metal. Honorable Divisions included the 82nd Airborne and the 2nd Armored Division (Hell on Wheels).
Some of the many places he was stationed during his career were the following: Keesler Field, MS; Geiger Field, WA; Giebelstadt AB, Germany; Wiesbaden AFB, Germany; Ft. Hood, TX; Ft. Benning, GA; Ft. Riley Kansas; Boot Strap School at University of Nebraska; Ft. Eustis, VA; West Point, NY; Ft. Still, OK; Ft, Carson, CO; Ft. Rucker, AL; Korea; Turkey; Vietnam and Okinawa.
With 22½ years in the military, he was a ranger, paratrooper, and special forces green beret.
He received a bachelor’s degree in Military Science from the University of Nebraska. He became an officer in 1959 after successfully completing Officer Candidate School in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. He was awarded a regular Army Commission in Transportation.
He was a Veteran of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam War.
His memorable military experiences included: ranger training, 47-mile march, Jump School, Jark marches in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, and Officer Candidate School (field artillery).
He married Lorraine Joyce Knapp on August 1st, 1956 at Chapel of the Wings, Ft. Rucker, Alabama.
He retired from the United States Army August 1st, 1969 and resided in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
He had a 2nd career working for the State of Florida Real Estate Commission for 19 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Gertrude, and siblings Irene, Harold, Mary, Edward, Betty, Grace, Dorothy and Gary.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Joyce Stevens of 64 years, son Christopher Patrick Stevens, daughter Kimberly Joyce English, grandchildren: Morgan Elizabeth English, Nathaniel Karter English, Darlene Elizabeth Stevens and many nieces and nephews.
He will be lovingly missed by all of them.
Visitation will be on Saturday June 6 starting at 4:00 PM. The Funeral Service will be held at 4:30 PM at the T.M. Ralph Plantation Funeral Home 7001 NW 4 Street Plantation, FL 33317.
