Madison Lewelen Holroyd

Madison Lewelen Holroyd, of Cedar Vale, KS, passed away peacefully at the age of 99 on May 26, 2020 at the Kansas Veteran’s Home in Winfield, KS.

He was born May 15, 1921 in Cedar Vale, KS to Madison Lewelen Holroyd and Martha Lucille (Webb) Holroyd. Madison was baptized as a teenager in Ft. Collins and was a devout Christian throughout the rest of his life. He never stopped learning or searching and his efforts to be more like Jesus were evident in his deep, insightful conversations. His thoughtfulness and wisdom were testaments of his faith, which served as a strong pillar for all those who knew him. He graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1938 and attended Cowley County Junior College and Kansas State University.

He married Cleo Dudgeon Holroyd on January 10, 1943. Madison served in the U.S. Army during WWII as an x-ray technician in a mobile field hospital in the South Pacific. After the war, he returned to the states where he worked for Phillips Petroleum Co. in Bartlesville, OK, from 1952 to 1957. He transferred to Idaho Falls, ID in 1957 and continued to work for Phillips at the National Reactor Testing Station. In 1965, he began volunteering as a ski patrolman, which he enjoyed until the family moved back to the Kansas farm in 1973. Madison was larger than life, full of spunk and truly a friend to all. Anyone who had the honor of knowing him quickly learned that Madison’s secret to a fulfilling life was to never stop learning, growing or finding new adventures. Madison went on to ski until age 80, ride a roller coaster at age 90 and explore the family farm on a four-wheeler until age 98. His passion for life and people was undeniable and he humorously referred to his energetic disposition as a “Tigger.” Madison cared deeply for his family and friends, who filled his life with joy and purpose.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cleo, parents, and sisters, Margaret Thompson and Marilyn Wilkinson. Madison is survived by his three children, Nancy (Larry) Nisle, Beth Knapp and Roger (Bonita) Holroyd; seven grandchildren, Ken (Theresa) and Randy (Delia) Rushing, Lauri Lewellyn, Garrett (Tera) and Timothy (Gabrielle) Knapp, and Stephen and Katie Holroyd; and eight great-grandchildren, Ashlyn, Kenley and Leighton Rushing, Brynn and Parker Rushing, and Malachi, Imri and Kenan Knapp; along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at the Hewins Park Pavilion in Cedar Vale, KS on Saturday, June 13, 2020 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a graveside service at Ozro Falls Cemetery in Hewins, KS.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Cedar Vale High School Scholarship Program and those can be mailed to Cedar Vale High School, 500 Dora Street, Cedar Vale, Kansas 67024.
