DALHART - Homer A. Davis, 82, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007, in Houston.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. James Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. Lamuel Salik, interim rector of the church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Horizon Funeral Home.

Homer A Davis was born Sept. 8, 1924, to Homer Jack Davis and Eupha B. Gates Davis in Gatesville. He graduated from London High School in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army in the European theater of operation. After the war, Homer attended North Texas State University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in science in 1949 and received his L.L.B. from Baylor University in 1951. On Aug. 29, 1947, he married Jacquelyn Debenham at the Little Chapel in the Woods in Denton. They moved to Dalhart in 1951.

A self-described "Country Lawyer," he was a Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Association, past president of the 69th Judicial District and served two terms on the State Bar Grievance Committee.

Homer's services to his community, both state and local, include teaching Sunday school for more than 25 years, lay reader for St. James Episcopal Church and counselor of Vestry and vestry members, State Youth Council of the State of Texas, member of the Old Main Society at Baylor University, two terms as president of Dalhart Chamber of Commerce, past XIT director, past director of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce, two terms as district chairman of Dallam and Hartley County Llano Estacado Council of Boy Scouts, five separate terms as deputy district governor of Lions International, past president of the Dalhart Lions Club, helped organize the Dalhart Youth Council, chairman of the Polio Fund before it became incorporated into the United Way, Hartley County attorney for 33½ years (elected in 1957), Dalhart city attorney for 33 years (began in 1954) and Hartley County Appraisal Board of Directors 1982 to 1996 and chairman 1988 to 1996.

He received numerous awards including Citizen of the Year in 1971, Melvin Jones Award in 1997, recognized by the Baylor Founders Club for outstanding contributions to the support of Christian Higher Education and recognized by the Texas Legislature with a resolution, H.S.R. No. 390 dated April 26, 1971, for Unselfish Service to Community and City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Jackie Davis of Dalhart; a daughter, Helen Ann Davis of Dalhart; a son, Dale Davis of Waco; three grandsons, Ramsey Daugherty, Blair Daugherty and Asher Daugherty and wife Candace, all of Dalhart; a great-granddaughter, Avery Daugherty of Dalhart; and uncle, Harold Davis of Kilgore.

The family suggests memorials be to St. James Episcopal Church, 801 Denver, Dalhart, TX 79022-3625.
