Ilene E. Birnbaum Smith, 94, died May 24, 2020 at her home in Delray Beach, FL.

She was born August 17, 1925 in Ticonderoga, NY, the daughter of Frank and Klara Lewkowicz Birnbaum.

Ilene graduated from Ticonderoga High School in 1942. She received her Bachelor's degree in 1946 and her Master's degree in Education in 1964 from Plattsburgh State University of New York.

Her teaching career began at Keeseville Central School, later The AuSable Valley Central in 1946 and continued through 1980.

In 1948 she became a charter member of Court St. Francis Xavier Catholic Daughters. She served as Lecturer two terms and was active through 1980.

From 1960-1980 Ilene was a supervising teacher of students from her Alma Mater.

While at college Ilene was a very active member of the Footlights Club. She had a leading role in "Cry Havoc" a drama of Woman's Heroism on Bataan.

Several of her poems were published in the college magazine.

On April 20, 1947 Ilene became the wife of Charles E. Smith, Sr. That year Ilene directed a play "A Bargain is a Bargain." The proceeds went to the American Legion. The commander was her husband. The play was then produced for the many WWII Veterans at Sunmount in Tupper Lake.

Ilene became involved in politics as her husband became Mayor of Keeseville and then the Supervisor of the Town of Chesterfield and the Democrat Chairmen of Essex County, NY.

On February 10, 1961 Ilene was appointed to the board of trustees of the Keeseville Library.

Ilene's class was the first to recycle by having newspaper drives involving the entire school.

Mrs. Smith involved members of the community by having informative field trips.

To inspire her students to be involved in Government, in March 1974, the children wrote to the White House expressing the desire to keep Armistice Day on November 11. The students received a response from President Nixon.

In 1980, Ilene retired from teaching. She received many accolades and a special plaque for her many years of service to the school and the community.

On April 20, 1991 Charles died on their 44th Wedding Anniversary. She is also predeceased by seven brothers and four sisters.

Ilene is survived by a daughter, Cynthia of Tupper Lake; son, Major Charles Smith, Jr. of Valencia, CA; many nieces, and nephews, and several grand nieces and grand nephews.
