William (Bill) “Mac” McKenzie, 85, of Virginia Beach passed away peacefully at his home on May 23, 2020. Bill was born in Big Timber, Montana, February 18, 1935. He was the son of the late Bernice Cook and Orval McKenzie. He grew up in Pendelton, Oregon and after graduating high school he enlisted in the United States Navy. He exceled in his work and advanced through the ranks until he was commissioned as a Naval officer. He served on submarines and surface ships through the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a recognized expert pistol shot on the Navy Pistol Team and received numerous awards during his 20-year service. He retired from the Navy in 1973 and took an entry level position at Atlantic Energy marine terminal. He quickly advanced and became the General Manager. He retired from Atlantic Energy in 1999.

Bill believed and lived a life of always doing his best and met challenges head on. He was a 40-year colon cancer survivor which left him with health issues that he fought throughout the remainder of his life, never complaining or burdening his family with his ailments, or letting it slow him down. He was a man of faith, high integrity, intelligence and a patriot. He loved his family and country deeply. He had a superior work ethic and was committed to excellence in all he did. He loved to study and learn and encouraged others to never stop learning and growing in knowledge. While working full time he took various courses of personal interest at Old Dominion University and Tidewater Community College. He earned an associate’s degree in business administration and was initiated into Phi Theta Kappa, National Honor Fraternity.

Bill was a committed husband, father, and grandfather. He is preceded by his parents, his brother, Orval McKenzie, and his beloved grandson Michael “Mikey” McKenzie. He is survived by his cherished wife of 63 years, Lucille Winker McKenzie; his six children, Theresa Reynolds, Michael McKenzie, Sheila Raffa, Robert McKenzie, Patricia Ramos, and Billie Jo McKenzie-NG; his grandchildren, David Raffa, Luke Reynolds, Elizabeth Parrish, Madison Ramos, Justin McKenzie, Keri Bailes, Carolyn NG, and Sarah NG, and his great grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday, May 30th, at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Kempsville Chapel, 1485 Kempsville Road, Virginia Beach 23464. Your consideration to adhere social distancing and the wearing of a mask is appreciated. The viewing is from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm in the chapel and will be immediately followed by a celebration of life at 2:00 pm. The grave site burial starts at 3:00 pm at the Rosewood Memorial Park Cemetery on N. Whitchduck Rd. in Virginia Beach.
