Charles Lewis Abernethy Sr. son of the late Bernice Abernethy and Wilford Wilfong was born October 24, 1945 in Catawba County. He departed this life unexpectedly Wednesday March 18, 2020. He was a graduate of Ridgeview High School Class of 1965 and retired from General Electric Company after 30 years of Service.

Charles Sr. was known as a very giving and hardworking man who took care of his family. He enjoyed gardening and sharing it with his family, friends and neighbors. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Frank Abernathy, Kathy Abernathy Brice, Vickie Rhyne, and Mildred Williams.

He leaves to cherish loving memories his wife of 50 years Irene Mull Abernethy, his children Leisa (DaRaymas) Braboy of Winston-Salem, N.C., Chinita (Vergil) Robbs, Charles Abernethy Jr., Anthony (Kisha) Abernethy, and Tyrone Abernethy all of Hickory, N.C.; his siblings, Robert (Lena) Abernathy, William Lawrence Abernathy, Janice Abernathy, Pamela Abernathy, and Cecilia (Kevin) England Hickory, N.C., Gregory (Karen) Abernathy, of Charleston, S.C., Nancy Saddler, Judy Eckard, Terry (Myra) Wilfong, of Hickory, N.C., and Franklin Wilfong of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.; sisters-in-law, Tami Abernathy and Emma (Gene Surratt) Mull of Hickory, N.C.; brothers-in-law, Jack Brice of Hickory, N.C., Frankie (Betty) Mull, and William (Karen) Mull of Baltimore, Md.; 16 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2020, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church, 437 S. Center St., Hickory, N.C. with the Rev. I. Melvin Peay officiating. Burial will follow at Southside Cemetery.
