Mary’s life revolved around her love and care for others. When it came to her family, there was nothing that she wouldn’t do for them. Her care was most evident in her husband’s last years as she dropped everything to attend to his needs. No matter the situation, Mary would find the good, take life by the reigns, and do what she needed to do to improve the situation. Never one to complain or offer harsh words, Mary was a kind woman with a genuine, humble spirit.
Mary believed in having everything just right. She loved to primp, and you would be hard pressed to find her not wearing jewelry and her signature red lipstick. While she was out and about, her favorite spot was the Tasty Freeze in Goldsboro. Her day was made when she arrived and ordered that hot fudge sundae with peanuts.
Mary’s favorite way to show love to her family and friends was through food. Fond memories of her cooking are held by many, with special recollections of her chicken pastry, cabbage, fried chicken, and cornbread. No one could cook like Mary! When the meal was over, she insisted that the family take home all the leftovers to enjoy once more.
Mary’s joyful spirit was evident even in her later years. Constantly humming, Mary loved the sounds of country and gospel music.
Although Mary held several occupations during her life, perhaps her favorite job was being mama to her children and ma-ma to her grandchildren. Her constant care and affection for each of them was the primary goal of her life. Mary was a long-time member of Garris Chapel United Methodist Church.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, May 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery. The family will greet friends following the service, and other times at the home of her daughter, Teresa Hoyt.
Left to cherish Mary’s memory are her children, James Wiggins and wife Donna, Teresa Hoyt and husband, Patrick, Clifton Wiggins and Gail; grandchildren, Jamie Wiggins, Laura Wiggins, Sarah Wiggins, Luke Wiggins, Tristain Hoyt, and Nevaeh Wiggins; great-grandchild, Tyler Wiggins; sister, Dorothy Harris and husband Steve; and brothers, Lionel Ginn and wife, Kaye, and Charles Ginn.
The family would like to extend their deep gratitude to the staff of the Spring Arbor Wilson Memory Care Unit for their continuous care of Mary over the last five and a half years.
