Mary was born in Des Moines, IA on September 24, 1957 to Michael and Jean Fitzpatrick, the eldest of five children. She graduated from Hoover High School in 1976, where she was the manager of the women’s basketball team. She went on to obtain her certification as a nursing assistant from DMACC.
She worked at Wesley Acres, Luther Park and Mercy Hospital as a CNA, then as a greeter and cashier for Walmart, and, in recent years, at Urbandale Health Care. She loved to bring a smile, happiness, and comfort to everyone she met. Mary was an active member of Golden Circle and then Passageway. She enjoyed volunteering at the Passageway clubhouse and attending field trip activities like Iowa Cubs baseball games and horse racing at Prairie Meadows. She made several life-long friends during her membership and missed them dearly when she was unable to attend on a regular basis.
Mary loved her 11 nieces and nephews so much. She enjoyed attending their various athletic, music, and artistic activities to cheer them on and provide unwavering support. She was always there for any situation, big or small. She would proudly introduce herself as “Aunt Mary” to any of their friends and colleagues. As they grew up and had children of their own, Mary was thrilled to attend dance recitals and ball games for her nine great-nieces and nephews.
Mary will be greatly missed by her parents and her four siblings: Ann (Gary) Brockman of Des Moines, IA; Kathleen (David) Schnoebelen of Johnston, IA; John (Darla) Fitzpatrick of Urbandale, IA; and Tom Fitzpatrick of Des Moines, IA. She was preceded in death by her grandparents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Passageway, 6000 Grand Ave. Suite G, Des Moines, IA 50312 or Bishop Drumm Care Center, 5837 Winwood Drive, Johnston, IA 50131.
