Jerry was born to Judge Allen Pettiet , and his second wife,
Alice L. Rowden. Judge (his actual first name) was exempted from military service due to his employment in a critical defense job during WW II He worked in the shipyards in Alameda County, California, near San Francisco. Mr Pettiet passed away at an early age, leaving his wife and four year old, Jerry.

About 1950, Jerry was sent to live with his Uncle Terrell Pettiet's family in Texas. He blended in so well, that few people knew of his early life.

Jerry spent his school years in the West Texas oiltown, Midland. He graduated from Lee High School in 1963. He was a classmate of Four Star General, Tommy Franks, Central Command in Afghanistan during Operation Desert Storm. He was a schoolmate of Actor, Tommy Lee Jones, and Former First Lady, Laura Welch Bush.

Jerry was twice-married, fathering two children, a son and a daughter.
