Michael Shean Fielder died in Iraq on August 19, 2007. Prior to his death Michael was serving with the United States Army Veterinary Corps in Iraq caring for military working dogs.
Michael was born in Dallas, Texas on September 17, 1971 and moved to North Carolina in 1984. After graduating from high school Michael served in the United States Navy from 1990 to 1994 aboard the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy. Michael graduated from North Carolina State University in 1999 magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in zoology and received a doctorate of veterinary medicine in 2004 from the North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation from veterinary school Michael was commissioned a Captain in the United States Army, where he served in the Veterinary Corps.
While in the service Michael's awards and decorations include the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, James Fielder.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife, of nine years, Mary Thompson Fielder; his mother and step-father, Janet and Jesse King; step-mother Cathy Fielder;, sister, Allison Butler and her husband, Wes; brothers, John Fielder and his wife, Carrie, and Will Fielder and his fiancee, Dr. Elaine Nelson; mother and father-inlaw, Margaret and A.B. Thompson Jr.; sister-in-law, Emily Cobb and her husband Barry; sisters-in-law, Laura Thompson, and Sarah Thompson; brother-in-law, Captain Arthur Thompson and his fiancee, Jessica Horton; grandparents, Lila King and Frank, and Chris Graves; as well as two nephews; and a niece. Michael also leaves his "four-leggedchildren" dogs, Bucket and Haley; and his cat, Frankie.
Michael will be remembered as a devoted husband, beloved son, brother, and uncle, faithful friend, and a skilled and caring veterinarian. He was extremely well liked by the soldiers under his command, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
