Robert Louis Barrett was the son of Otis Barrett and Marie Estella Threatt who was born in Richmond.

Jessie Mae Williams Barrett, 88, passed away Saturday, May 2, 2020, and her loving husband of 63 years, Robert Louis Barrett, 85, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2020 both of Pinehurst, North Carolina.

Robert Barrett, entered into eternal rest on May 9, 2020, in Pinehurst, NC.

Robert Louis Barrett, aka “The Wiseman,” was born as the tenth child on November 22, 1934, to the late Otis Barrett and Marie Threatt Barrett in Cameron, NC.

Robert grew up in a large family the he adored in the big city of Cameron, North Carolina. He joined Hood Chapel AME Zion Church at an early age. Robert received his education in Cameron, N, and later Pinckney High School in Carthage, NC, graduating in 1955. After graduating, he began working as a caddy in and around Moore County until marrying his lovely wife Jessie Mae on January 20, 1957. After their union, they moved to Pittsburgh, PA, where he worked at Carnegie Mellon Research Institute. In the later 1960’s he relocated to Detroit, MI where he retired with perfect attendance from General Motors after thirty-five years.

After retirement, he and his wife decided to relocate back to Moore County, where they built their home in Pinehurst, North Carolina, in 1998. He rejoined his home church of Hood Chapel to which he was an active member until death. The Wiseman, as he was often referred, enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and great-grandchild; they referred to him as “papa” He enjoyed cracking jokes, taking care of the yard, and helping anyone he could.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Mae Barrett, siblings: Gracie Mae, Oglatha Pratt, Cora Manley, Herbert, Roscoe, Herman, George, Henry, and Alfred Leroy Barrett.

Robert leaves to cherish his memories, a daughter, Vickie Barrett-Clay of the home, two granddaughters, Jessica Clay and Brittany Clay of Charlotte, NC; one grandson Victor Clay, of the home; his buddy and best friend, great-grandson, Dillion “Buddy” Johnson of Charlotte, NC; godchildren, Antonio Plummer and Ronald Moffet both of Detroit, MI, and LeRoi Larkin of California; one brother, James C. Barrett (Earlene) of Suitland, MD; sister-in-law’s, Mary Taylor of Pittsburgh, PA, Mattie Williams of Carthage, NC, Mae Frances Barrett of Vass, NC, Thelma Williams of Robbins, NC, Viola Williams of Columbus, OH, Margie Barrett of Oxon Hill, MD and Henrietta Barrett of Bowie, MD; one brother-in-law, Willie Williams of Robbins, NC; close friend, Reverend Daniel Moore of Detroit, MI; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and church family of Hood Chapel AME Zion Church in Cameron, North Carolina.

A private family visitation will be held on Saturday, May 30, from noon-1 pm at the funeral home with funeral services following at 1 pm in the chapel.

The couple will entomb at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Southern Pines.
