Welcome was in New York state in 1806. He was a respected medical doctor who married Harriet Elizabeth Sergeant that same year. Harriet Sergeant's father, John Sergeant Jr. was missionary to the Stockbridge Indians in Vernon, Oneida County.

Harriet Sergeant's grandfather, John Sergeant Sr. was a 1729 Yale Valedictorian, who taught at Yale before leaving to protect the Algonquin Native Americans by creating Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where his home can be toured between Memorial Day and Labor Day. He married Abigail Williams whose half-brother created Williams College and Williams Town. His son, John Jr. moved them to Oneida County, New York for their protection as Stockbridge real estate gained value for wealthy, who wanted the natives' land.

Dr. Welcome and Harriet Sergeant Sayles had 8 children: Margaret, Mary Jane, Henry, Catherine, Thomas, Augustine, Helen and John (who moved to Texas, became an attorney, and was the first author of Texas Law) and a founding law professor of Baylor Law School.

In her autobiography, Welcome's granddaughter, Emma Sayles McAtee, wrote of Welcome as "the beloved physician to many families, and his aid was sought in distant farms and villages whenever serious sickness came..."

Welcome's Will was proved on February 3, 1851 in Clinton, New York.
