Robert Hay Dickson was the only child Robert Fairchild Dickson and Ruth Hay Dickson. He served as Master Sergeant commanding a 105 mm howitzer crew near Trieste, Italy on the Yugoslavian border as WWII ended and the Cold War began. He completed his education at VA Tech in Architectural Engineering where he married Barbara Kerfoot of Roanoke, VA and they had 3 sons, Robert Hay Dickson, Jr., Bruce Fairchild Dickson, and Keith Kerfoot Dickson. Following a divorce in 1972, he married Kay Brandeaux of Charlotte, NC. They had a daughter, Macy born in 1974. He married Roberta Symington and they were married 24 years. Nicknamed "Bob", he was 6ft 8in tall and excelled in basketball, baseball and tennis.
