John William “Johnny” Humphrey, age 76, of Lavonia, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at his home following an extended illness.
Born December 14, 1943, he was the son of the late Eugene Minor and Irene (Vandiver) Humphrey. He was a 1961 graduate of Lavonia High School and a veteran of the Army National Guard. Johnny was owner and operator of Franklin County Auto Parts until his retirement. He was also the former owner of Commerce Auto Parts, in Commerce, and Big A Auto Parts, in Toccoa and Hartwell. Following retirement, he enjoyed working on computers for his friends, which he continued as long as his health allowed. He was a retired firefighter and officer with the Lavonia Fire Department. He was a founding member of the Rebel CB Club Ambulance Service, which was the first ambulance service in Lavonia. He loved auto racing and was an official at Lavonia, Hartwell, and Toccoa, Speedways. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and the Sanctuary Sunday School Class. Johnny is widely known and remembered by his family, friends, and community for his generosity and gentle spirit.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years: Sue (Tucker) Humphrey of the home; daughter & son-in-law: Sharon & Rodney Ashworth of Hartwell; son & daughter-in-law: Dr. Stewart & Alejandra Humphrey of MO; grandchildren: Cohen Ashworth and John Stewart Humphrey; brothers & sisters-in-law: Jerome & Kaye Humphrey of Martin and Joe & Merita Humphrey of Rome; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son: Brian Jay Humphrey; twin daughters; and his brother & sister-in-law Jeff & Francis Humphrey.
A private chapel service will be held at the funeral home with burial following in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Following the service on Saturday, a recording will be on the funeral home website for those wishing to view
