Thomas was the son of Rev. Edward Sims and Myrtis Kelly Sims. He was educated in the Sumter County School System and was a Class of 1962 graduate of Americus High School in Americus, Georgia. He attended Fort Valley State College for 2 years and worked various jobs in the area. He Enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps. on December 1, 1970 and served proudly for 7 years and received his Honorable Discharge. He returned to Americus and in 1978, began working for the United States Postal Service, retiring in 2002 after 24 years of service.

As a youth, he joined Friendship Baptist Church. Upon his return home, he joined the Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church where he was Ordained as a Deacon. He was called into the Ministry and received his Ministers License on December 10, 2000. He served as a Minister at Bethesda for 19 years and member for 44 years. He then joined Union Tabernacle Baptist Church in Americus where he served as a Minister until his death.

He was formerly married to Vivian Dunn Sims. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers; Robert Sims and Paul Sims, 2 brothers-in-law; Rev Eddie Josey and Albert Blanch and 1 sister-in-law, Viola Sims.

Survivors:
1 Daughter: Sharon M. Simpson.
2 Sons: Thomas E. Sims Jr(Phebee) and Francois Sims(Dianah).
2 Sisters: Kate Blanch and Dorothy Williams(Curtis).
3 Brothers: Bobby Sims Sr(Pauline), Calvin Sims(Rosa) and Larry Sims(Virginia).
14 Devoted Friends: Monica Bowen, Davetta Thompson, Lorine Maltbia, Mary Blue, Wardell Willis, Willie Jackson, Arthur King, Dianne Watkins, Frank Latimore, Robbie Latimore, Frank Sims, Gwen Meriwether, Pastor D. J. Johnson and Michelle Ellerby.
5 Grandchildren: D'Ette Thomas(Kord), Camille Sims, Faraja Sims, Ayden Sims and Dylan Simpson.

Services were held Thursday, May 28, 2020 at 11AM in the Front Drive Thru of Union Tabernacle Baptist Church Porte Cochere in Americus, Georgia with Rev B. J. Sims officiating. Graveside services were held Friday, May 29, 2020 in the Andersonville National Cemetery in Andersonville, Georgia.
