JoAnn was born on Aug. 29, 1940, in Boston, Ga., to Ed and Lucy Mae Hutchinson. She was raised on a farm in southern Georgia and graduated from Young Harris College in northern Georgia. She lived in Washington, D.C. and Miami, FL before eventually moving her family to Chattanooga, Tennessee where she lived for more than 45 years. She worked for the Hamilton County Department of Education in Tennessee for more than 20 years.
Our mom’s greatest passion was her faith. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Hixson, Tennessee for over 40 years. She was a devout Christian who loved God the Father and His son Jesus Christ, and she raised us according to His word. She had a passion for growing things, especially flowers. She had a passion for reading. She was kind, compassionate, selfless, witty, strong-willed, down-to-earth, joyful, and funny. She had a lot of spunk. She felt a deep love for her mother, whom she has missed greatly since her passing some 50 years ago. She loved her three children just as deeply. We were truly fortunate and blessed to have this incredible woman as our mother. She will be missed and remembered every day of our lives.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Nita and her two bothers Berner Ray and Hugh Paul.
She is survived by her brother, Bobby (Karen) Hutchinson and sister, Annelle Aldridge, her three children, Kenny (Amy) Pearson, Keith (Stacie) Pearson and Kendra (Ray) Joyner, and two grandchildren, Kristen and Ben Pearson.
We would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Dominion Senior Living, Josh Youngman with Hearth Hospice and Susan Gooden with Gooden’s Compassionate Care for the special care they provided to our mom in her final weeks. We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Davey Daniel and the staff of Tennessee Oncology for their attentiveness and dedication in helping our mom through her journey with cancer.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Entombment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
