His last name was originally Jerka. It appears to have been "Americanized" when he emigrated to the USA, and spelled as it is pronounced in German - Yerka. I have conflicting documents that have him born in Moscow, Russia and Frankfurt, Germany. There was a large German population in Russia and the Ukraine prior to WWII. His WW I Draft Card list him born in Frankfurt, and his WW II Draft Card list him born in Moscow. His usual residence at the time of his death was Jersey Avenue, in Gloucester City, Camden County, NJ.
