Fur trader Louis Blanchette founded the city of St. Charles, Missouri in 1769. The riverfront trading center, originally named Les Petites Cotes (The Little Hills), along the Missouri River just west of St. Louis grew into a thriving city that was eventually selected as Missouri's first State Capital.
