Carl "Elmer" Sundquist, 94, longtime Marble resident, died Monday, May 31, 2004 in Evergreen Terrace, Grand Rapids. Born May 9, 1910, in Taconite, he was the son of Charles E. and Ida M. (Johnson) Sundquist. Elmer grew up in Taconite, was a Greenway High School graduate and had been a resident of Marble since his high school graduation. He had been an investigator for the Spellacy and Lano law firm in Grand Rapids for 30 years, retiring in 1975. During high school, Elmer was active in school plays and participated in track. In 1928, he set the record for the 220 yard low hurdles. An avid singer, he had his own half hour show on WMFG radio in Hibbing, was a member of the Great Lakes Naval Station Choir and sang for funerals for many years. Elmer had been a lifeguard at Twin Lakes, helped organize and served as the cub master for the first Cub Scout Pack in Marble in the 1930s, received the Silver Badger Award from the Boy Scouts of America, was elected mayor of Marble at age 71 and again at 80, served as a justice of the peace for 40 years and performed 96 marriages, was a member of the Marble Senior Citizens and served as its president for eight years, loved to play pool, was selected Itasca County Outstanding Senior Citizen in 1994, and served as an officer of American Legion Post No. 337 for more than 50 years. Elmer served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the South Pacific aboard the USS Sheridan and attained the rank of chief petty officer. While serving in the Navy, Elmer was shipmates with and became friends with Eddie Albert.

He is survived by his K-9 best friend, "Pepie"; three nephews, Gary M. (Margaret) Stark, Hibbing, John "Jack" Barkla, and Emmett J. (Charlotte) Stark, both of Minneapolis; and several grandnieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents and two sisters, Ardella Stark and Hazel Barkla. Memorials are preferred to the Coleraine Animal Shelter.

Services: Friday, June 4 at 11 a.m. at Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine. Visitation is from 10 a.m. until the service. Burial in Lakeview Cemetery, Coleraine. Arrangements by Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine.
