1927 - 2020
Carl Thomas Rhodes Jr., 92, of West Pittston, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 16, 2020, at home.
Born June 11, 1927, in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Carl Rhodes and Maude Snyder Rhodes, and stepson of the late Stella Rhodes.
Carl was a newspaper pressman for over 40 years, entering the trade in 1943. In 1978, Carl helped found The Citizens' Voice newspaper, where he was the press foreman until his retirement in 1990. His career was only interrupted during World War II, when Carl served in the United States Navy. He was deployed to China from 1945 to 1946 and he often spoke of walking on the Great Wall of China as one of the highlights.
Carl was an avid golfer, fisherman and hunter all his life. He shared his love of these hobbies with his children and grandchildren. He was a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and watched every game.
Carl also was an active member of the American Pool Association. On several occasions, he helped his pool teams earn trips to the national championships in Las Vegas, Nev. His most recent trip was in 2018, when he was 91 years old. He was able to make the trip with the help of his teammates and close friends, Dave Wallace, Justin Wallace, Bob Fujiura and Herb Sims. These guys meant the world to him.
Carl was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who will be dearly missed. He will be remembered for his heart of gold and great sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Jeanette George Rhodes; his son, David Carl Rhodes; and his sister, Jean Rhodes Newbigging.
He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Rychwalski and her companion, Robert Jasterzenski, Swoyersville; his grandchildren, Jami Brown; David Rhodes; Sare Rhodes; Brianne Herron; Katrina Potera; Ashleigh Fanti; Richard Fanti; Michael Rychwalski; and Grace Rychwalski; his great-grandchildren, Isabella, Michael, Kaia, Cassie, Sutton, Lilyana, Jace and Rowan; his nephews, Sheffe Abraham; and Doug Newbigging; and his niece, Phyllis Carra.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Antiochian Orthodox Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are by Mamary-Durkin Funeral Service, Corp., 59 Parrish St. Wilkes-Barre.
