Renowned physician. A neurosurgeon, Dr. Joyner earned his Bachelor's degree from Albion College in 1955. In 1959, he graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine and became the first African American to be accepted directly from the medical school into a post graduate training program at the Indiana University Medical Center. At the height of his professional career, Dr. Joyner served as the president of the National Medical Association from 1987-88. During this time, he and the organization launched the first national HIV/AIDS education program for minority physicians and other health care providers. For this program and other efforts, Dr. Joyner and the NMA earned the Distinguished Service Award from the US Department of Health and Human Services for service to poor and medically underserved areas of the United States. Dr. Joyner also earned an Honorary Doctorate from Martin University, the Benjamin S. Hooks Award from the Gary, Indiana chapter of the NAACP, a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Albion College, a Distinguished Hoosier Award from then-Governor Evan Bayh, an Indiana University Physicians' Humanitarian Award and the NMA's Scroll of Merit.
