Newell Verdell Shankel was the son of John Walter Shankle, (DOB 10/13/1881 - DOD 10/3/1936), & the grandson of John W. Shankle, (DOB 2/4/1844 - DOD 1/12/1923), & Virginia Ann "Jennie" Cleaves, (DOB 5/10/1851 - SOD 3/26/1904), who are all buried at Seminary Cemetery, in Weakley County, Tennessee, he was the great grandson of Valentine Shankle, (DOB 1811 - DOD ukn) & Lucy Eudy, (DOB ukn DOD ukn), he was the great great grandson of Beverly Shankle, (DOB 1791 - DOD ukn) & Margaret, (DOB 1791 - DOD ukn), he was the great great great grandson of Valentine Shankle, (DOB ukn - DOD 1841), & Susanna, (DOB ukn - DOD ukn), he was the great great great great grandson of Abarham Shankle, (DOB abt 1714 - DOD ukn), he was the great great great great great grandson of Avold Schenkel who was born in Oldenburg, Germany in 1688 and died in Berwick, Scotland in 1745. Verdell married Minnie Evelyn Matheny and they later moved to Chicago. They had 3 children, (1) Gaylord Shankle, (2) Eddie Sankle & (3) Donald Shankle. Newell comitted sucide by shooting himself in the head while living in Chicago, they brought him back and buried him at Beech Springs Cemetery. Newell Verdell's last name is spelled Shankel on his headstone. Evidently this is the Jewish spelling for the name Shankle even though Avold spelled his last differently because I received an e-mail on September 4, 2013, from E. Michel Shankel wanting to know if I could help find any Jewish lines for the name Shankel because it was his understanding Oldenburg was not very far from Hamburg where a lot of Jews immigrated from.
