Marvin Hugh Phillips, 95, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2020, in Raleigh, NC.

Marvin was born on November 14, 1924, in Edgecombe County to Fred Hugh and Susan Dickens Phillips. He moved to Scotland Neck as a young boy and lived in Pecan Grove until his retirement from farming and relocation to Raleigh in 1989. Marvin also owned and operated the Phillips peanut shelling company and farm supply business. He was an active member of Nahalah Presbyterian Church for many years. Marvin loved the farm, his family, and his friends.

Marvin was predeceased by his parents, his wife of 72 years, Emily Holmes Downs Phillips, and three siblings, sisters Theora Phillips Stroud and Margaret Phillips Harrell of Scotland Neck and brother, George Thomas Phillips of Garner.

Marvin is survived by his children Alan Phillips and wife, Susie, of Morris Pa.; Amy Farmer Cockman and husband, Bob, of Raleigh; and Martha Phillips Mazur and husband Gary, of Raleigh. He is also survived by grandchildren, Michael Phillips of Raleigh, Josh Farmer and wife, Amy, of Surf City, Ryan Mazur and Emma Mazur, both of Raleigh. His two great-grandchildren are Sterett and Ella Farmer of Surf City. Marvin’s sisters, Edna Sorie and Pat Whitehead of Scotland Neck also survive.

Due to covid-19 restrictions, a private memorial service is being held in Raleigh with a celebration of both Marvin’s and Emily’s lives to be scheduled at a later time.

Marvin’s and Emily’s ashes will be interred at Nahalah Presbyterian Church. Please make any memorials to the church at 11890 Highway 258 South, Scotland Neck, NC 27874.
