Michael Raub was the third child of German immigrants Vincent and Margaret Strickfaden Raub and was born in Youngstown on June 3, 1858.

He married Margaret A. Geidner on January 5, 1883, and together they had 10 children: Katherine, Ida M., Alma, Frances, Vincent, Teresa, Earl, Alfred, Paul, and Margaret. Vincent and Ida died during childhood.

He worked as a butcher on Youngstown's East End for many years. After his retirement, he worked at the Simon Packing plant and was appointed city meat inspector in 1909.
