Musician. Born in Lodz, Poland, he studied music at the Warsaw Conservatory and became an international concert pianist-composer. During the 1950s, he won prizes in several international competitions and settled finally in Paris in 1960. In 1968, he recorded the complete works of Chopin for Decca Records which was received as a revelation and a reference for pianists the world over. As a composer, he left a considerable amount of brilliant pieces for piano, sonatas, concertos, two symphonies, a ballet, vocalizes and orchestral works. A virtuoso of piano, he regularly gave concerts in many different European countries, overseas and founded the International Piano Competition in 1985. He died of a heart attack during a tour of concerts in Tahiti.
