John Goodrich, son of Adam Goodrich and his first wife Anne, was baptized at St. Ethelbert parish in Hessett, Suffolk, England on 08 Sep 1568. John was a wealthy felt-maker, landowner, and an alderman of Bury St. Edmunds, and so he is often referred to as John Goodrich the Alderman; in part to distinguish him from his younger first cousin, John Goodrich the Clothier of Bury St. Edmunds; father of the immigrants John and William Goodrich of Wethersfield, CT.

Though no marriage record has been found for him, his 30 Jun 1625 will and the baptismal register of St. Mary parish in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England revealed he had 12 children: 1) John (principal heir), 2) Henry bp. 06 Apr 1595, 3) Elizabeth bp. 21 Mar 1596/7; bur. 11 Mar 1604/5, 4) Martha bp. 26 Feb 1598/9, 5) Benjamin bp. 20 Jan 1600/1, 6) Anne bp. 12 Jan 1602/3. 7) Susan bp. 09 Feb 1603/4, 8) Mary bp. 24 May 1605; bur. 18 Jun 1616, 9) Katherine bp. 01 Mar 1606/7; bur. 18 April 1607, 10) Francis bp. 06 May 1610, 11) Robert bp. 20 Mar 1613/4; bur. 13 Jun 1616. and 12) Thomas, bp. 14 Apr 1615.

Youngest son Thomas immigrated to America and is known as Thomas Goodrich of Old Rappahannock, Virginia; a second cousin of the immigrants William Goodrich/Goodridge of Watertown, MA and John and William Goodrich of Wethersfield, CT, who were first cousins; they were all co-descendants of shared great-grandfather Robert Goodrich of Felsham.

The 30 Jun 1625 will of John Goodrich the Alderman of Bury St. Edmunds; proved 01 Mar 1625/6, named wife Martha, though all of the baptismal and burial records for his children named only the father. "John Goodrich, Gentleman" was buried at St. Mary-Bury St. Edmunds on 11 Oct 1625.

Next-generation-sequencing (NGS) Y-SNP testing established in 2015 that Y-descendants of immigrants William-1 Goodrich/Goodridge of Watertown, MA and William-1 Goodrich of Wethersfield, CT; first-cousins who share common Y-ancestor William Goodrich I of Hessett (~1545-1631), share the Y-SNP mutation E-L1019, and an additional 37 Y-SNP mutations after E-Z16242, with Y-descendants of immigrant Thomas-1 Goodrich of Old Rappahannock, VA; a second cousin who shares common Y-ancestor Robert Goodrich of Felsham (~1505-1570).

The first son of William Goodrich II of Hessett; believed to be William Goodrich III of Hessett and later the immigrant William Goodridge of Watertown, MA is the only Y-descendant of William Goodrich I of Hessett capable of bringing about this order of Y-SNP relationship.
