John was a wealthy felt-maker, landowner, and an alderman of Bury St. Edmunds, and so he is often referred to as John Goodrich the Alderman; in part to distinguish him from his younger first cousin, John Goodrich the Clothier of Bury St. Edmunds; father of the immigrants John and William Goodrich of Wethersfield, CT.
