A daughter of Robert Elmer and Jessie Pearl (Pinkerton) Puffer. Her parents were killed on April 29, 1912 when the car in which they were passengers was hit by a train. Helen lived with her paternal grandparents until their deaths in 1920. Helen married Gordon Gebbie in San Francisco where she was employed as a legal secretary. They were the parents of a daughter Melinda. A resident of San Francisco, Helen was visiting the home of friends in Santa Rosa when she collapsed, she died at the Santa Rosa Hospital. At the time of her death, the only known survivor was her sister Ruth.
