Robert Starr graduated from Selinsgrove High School in 1938 and attended Albright College, Reading, PA. He entered the US Army Air Corps in Jan 1942. He graduated from pilot training and was commissioned a 2Lt in Sep 1942 and then assigned to a bomber squadron. In Feb 1943 he went overseas, first to Africa and then to England.

On May 17, 1943, while flying a B-26 Marauder bomber mission over Germany, his plane was shot down. He became a prisoner of war and taken to Stalag 3, Sagan-Silesia Bavaria, and later moved to Nuremberg-Langwasser. Lt Starr was a POW for over two years, and was liberated in May 1945. He was honorably discharged in Dec 1945.
