Mary Ellen Cox, 88, of Rockford died on Monday, July 11, 2022, in the loving care of her family. Born January 24, 1934, in Rockford, IL to Mildred Kathryn (Ohlin) Opsahl and Donald Gordon Opsahl. Mary grew up on the farm with her parents, grandparents and aunts and uncles. Mary was an avid animal lover. She had dogs from the time she was a little girl, raising Dobermans when she was older. She became a veterinary technician at Hilcrest Animal Hospital for many years. She later worked at Singer Mental Health Center until her retirement.

Mary married Bruce Cox on March 31, 1967 in Rockford IL. They spent 50 wonderful years together until his passing in 2018. They enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren. Mary was a member and of Northeast Christian Church and enjoyed her Bible Studies and coffee with her girlfriends. She enjoyed volunteering and helping with the funeral ministry at church.

Mary is survived by her children John Kruse, Mary Jane (Wade) Mitchell, Kathryn Pearce, Glen (Michelle) Cox and Gregg (Mary) Cox, 18 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her brother Sam and husband Bruce. Mary will be fondly remembered for her faith, love of family, love of animals, stubbornness, strength, and courage in the face of a long-term illness. Mary was never afraid to say what was on her mind. She will be missed. Our deep gratitude goes out to The Living Center (TLC) and Transitions for their compassionate and exceptional care of her in her final days.

Funeral service will be held at Northeast Christian Church, 5651 E Riverside Blvd, Rockford, IL 61114, on Friday, July 15th at 11:00 with a visitation beginning at 10:00 until time of service.
