Joseph Henderson Abercrombie was the son of Thomas Abercrombie and Katherine Barr of PA. He came to Mercer County in 1859 from Washington County, PA. He was a harness maker and opened a harness shop. He married Sarah R. Moore who died in 1867. She left one son, Charles B. Abercrombie. In 1878 he married Emma Gertrude Stevens and the family located in Keithsburg, IL. She died in 1906. There were 5 children of this marriage. Claude Chester Abercrombie; Lallie (Mrs. H. G. Knickerbocker); Thomas Abercrombie; Ruth Abercrombie (Mrs. W. C. Porter); and Gertrude Abercrombie who died at age 3.
