Archduke of Austria-Este. He was the second son of Karl I, the last Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and his wife, Princess Zita of Bourbon-Parma. His father, the Emperor, abdicated the title of Archduke of Austria-Este in Robert's favor on April 16, 1917. He was married on December 28, 1953 in Bourg-en-Bresse, France (civilly) and December 29, 1953 (religiously), in Brou, France to Princess Margherita of Savoy-Aosta, the elder daughter of the Amadeo, 3rd Duke of Aosta, and his wife, Princess Anne d'Orléans.
