24 May 1947 - 29 Apr 2020
Lexington, Kentucky
Gwendolyn “Beth” Russell, 72, of Lexington, Kentucky died Wednesday, April 29, 2020.
She grew up on a cotton farm in South Plains, Texas. Beth graduated from Floydada High School and later graduated from West Texas A&M University.
Beth was a school teacher for over 30 years, predominantly in Liberal, Kansas. She took great joy in teaching and molding the lives of her students.
In 2006, Beth moved to Lexington, Kentucky to be near her two sons. In “retirement” she led an energetic life; mowing lawns, gardening, walking, fishing, and cooking family favorites.
Beth was a big fan of the Kentucky Wildcats and the Dallas Cowboys. She also loved spoiling her three “grand-dogs”.
Beth’s faith was very important to her, and she believed that her purpose in life was to give to others. This was reflected in her genuine, caring and selfless demeaner. She was a friend to all she met. Beth grasped life enthusiastically, finding delight in the simple pleasures of family, friendship, and hard work.
She is survived by two sons, Bradley Russell and his wife, Natalie of Greensboro, Georgia and
Bryan Russell and his wife, Heather of Richmond, Kentucky; two brothers, John Calahan and his wife, Ann of Stephenville, Texas and Jerry Calahan and his wife, Carol of Canyon, Texas.
Beth was born May 24, 1947, in Lockney, Texas to John Shelby Calahan, Sr. and Margaret Bean Calahan.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Markey Cancer Foundation in honor of Beth at https://ukmarkey.org/donate/
