John R. Church Jr., 66, of Selinsgrove Center (ICF), passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, at home on Thursday, May 7, 2020, of natural causes.
Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late John R. Church Sr. and Shirley J. (Shenk) Church Mussachio.
Born with mental challenges and being non-verbal, John was a loving, caring, affectionate, smiling and helpful person. Within his capabilities, always willing to help his Center brothers or staff as needed and usually with a big smile while doing so. Selinsgrove provided a full, educational, functional, active, religious and happy life for John. Staff always supporting him, attentive to details, caring, compassionate, informative to family and all concerned with his care.
John enjoyed time spent with his parents and sisters, always happy to see us, with hugs and kisses to be shared. He liked rides, meals out, shopping trips, camping, the Bloomsburg Fair, a weekend at the beach, the Center's Café for extra ice cream treats, along with picnics and holiday events held by the Center throughout the year. Content to spend time with his staff and brothers, John liked rocking in his recliner, swings when outside, watching TV and the "living area happenings," all bringing smiles.
John was Catholic, a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Selinsgrove. He enjoyed church services, carrying the Cross for Mass, and presenting the gifts at the Altar with assistance while able.
Surviving John are sisters, Trudy Sheetz of Quarryville, Wendy Nichols (David) of Mill Creek; nephews, Fred (Shanna), Eric (Stephanie); niece, Sheri (Peter); great-nephews, Adam and Aaron; aunts, uncles and cousins.
Along with his parents, John was preceded in death by his step-father, paternal and maternal grandparents, and two brothers-in-law.
Our heartfelt gratitude and thanks to all Center staff - housekeeping, unit advocates, unit team leaders, social workers, 24/7 medical physicians and nurses, PT/OT, programming/activities, kitchen, dietary, barbers and administrative, for the care, quality of life and love bestowed on John.
We wish to acknowledge and thank Fr. Michael, his staff at St. Pius X, and the Selinsgrove Center Chaplain for their spiritual care of John. Also, the County Creamery in Kratzerville for their kindness in special preparation of John's meals when he visited. He loved the ham loaf!
Kindly omit flowers. Contributions in John's memory may be made to VOR (The Voice of Reason), national level, speaking out for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities at www.vor.net or VOR, 836 S. Arlington Heights Road, Elk Grove Village, Illinois 60007 or to St. Pius X Catholic Church, 112 Fairview Dr., Selinsgrove, PA 17870-9406.
Due to COVID-19 guidelines, a private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date.
Interment will be in St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Cemetery, Quarryville.
