Michael Charles Byrne, 69
Navy veteran and native Islander, 'committed to his faith'

Michael Charles Byrne, 69, cherished son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away on Friday, April 24, 2020, after a courageous battle with Covid-19 and additional health issues.

Michael was born on July 18, 1950, in Staten Island and grew up in West Brighton in an apartment above the family owned business, Byrne's Laundry and Linen Supply.

As a child, he enjoyed playing all types of sports with his brother and cousins in the neighborhood. He played football for St. Peter's Boys High School and as a young man developed a passion for running and participated in many local marathons and charity runs.

After graduating from high school, Michael enlisted in the Navy and served on active duty during the Vietnam Era. He took great pride in his service to his country. Upon completing his term of service, he enrolled in college and earned his bachelor's degree from the College of Staten Island and later attended graduate courses at Columbia University.

In addition to working for the family business, Michael held positions in the business community and the Catholic Church. He was committed to his faith and a member of Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel-St. Benedicta Churches where he taught CCD for many years. He received great joy and fulfillment teaching religion and was a beloved godfather to not only his own nieces and nephews, but several of his students as well.

Throughout his life, Michael was known as a kind and gentle man who deeply loved his family and was well-loved by all who knew him. His warm smile and cheerful spirit touched many lives. His interests included reading, music, long walks, and trips to the zoo. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, and especially enjoyed celebrating holidays and special occasions. He will be greatly missed.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Rita Byrne and his brother Joseph.
He is survived by his sisters Rita Lindsey and Jacqueline Ryan, his sister-in-law Johanna Byrne, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, their children, and his many cousins.

Due to current circumstances, funeral services at Harmon Funeral Home and burial at St. Peter's Cemetery will be private. A memorial Mass will be held at a later date.
