Mercy (Chatterton/Chittenden) Francis was born November 22, 1662 in New Haven, Connecticut to William and Mary (Clarke) Chatterton/Chittenden.

William Chatterton was perhaps the son of Michael Chatterton. He took the oak of fidelity on April 7, 1657; was a husbandman and received land in New Haven in 1679 and perhaps earlier. Thereafter, he owned various lands and in 1704 gave land to his son, Samuel, the weaver. He deeded his land to his son, John between 1699-1700, with the provision that his father and mother should live with their son and the latter should pay six half-bushels of good merchantable corn per year on demand {New Haven land records,}

Mary (Clarke) Chatterton was the daughter of James Clark. After the death of her husband, William in c 1717, she went to live with her daughter, Mary Hotchkiss in Wallingford. It is here that she died on 2/2/1722.

Mercy Chatterton married Sergeant John Francis on January 16 1683 in Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut. The Francis family is recorded as the first of families in Wethersfield.

She had fourteen known children with John.

She died October 13, 1745, in Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut. Her tombstone in the cemetery at Wethersfield reads: "Here lies interred, the body of Mrs. Mercy Frances, relict to Mr. John Francis, who died Oct, the 12th 1745 in the 80th year of her age.

Rest in peace.
