"I am just as happy today as when I was married 60 years ago," Mrs. Annie Amelia Dann said yesterday—her 60th wedding anniversary. With her husband, Mr. George Dann, Mrs. Dann lives in Park St. in the home which was built for them in 1911 on the then L. M. Shootbridge estate. Mr. and Mrs. Dann said yesterday that when they went to live in Park St. it was only a country road. Their house was the first one built between what is now Stoke St. and the New Town station. They received many congratulatory telegrams, greeting cards, and telephone calls yesterday as well as having numerous relatives and friends "popping in" to offer their best wishes. An early caller was the Rev. H.W. Burrage, while one of their telegrams was sent from friends in Cairns (Q.). Mr. Dann, who retired 15 years ago after having worked for many years as a gardener on the L. M. Shoobridge estate, still enjoys looking after his own spacious garden. He is 86 years of age. Mrs. Dann at 83 also leads an active life. She gardens, does her own house-work and cooking (usually on a fuel stove) and shops once a week. Both keep fairly good health, and Mrs. Dann said she thought the remedy for old age was plain living, hard work, and no beer! Mr and Mrs. Dann have 10 children— six sons and four daughters —14 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. With the exception of a married son on the West Coast and two married daughters living in the Tamar district, Mr. and Mrs. Dann's family (all married) lives in Hobart. Mrs. Dann made and decorated a large anniversary cake, which she does not intend cutting until Saturday afternoon, when all members of the family will be reunited in honour of the diamond wedding. She also made two
other smaller ones which she served with afternoon tea yesterday. Mr. and Mrs Dann's youngest son was married 12 years ago, and since then the couple has lived alone. "We do not lead a lonely life though, as there always seems to be someone about, and we are able to do all the work that we did before," Mrs. Dann proudly remarked. Mr. and Mrs. Dann usually go to bed at about 9.30 p.m. and are up again at 6.30 next morning. Mrs. Dann said that after having a large family she got so used to getting up early every morning she could not get out of the habit. Mrs. Dann herself came from a large family. She was the oldest of 14 children." - Hobart Mercury, Wednesday 4 August 1954, page 18
