World War I Soldier. Publisher. Ambassador. Archaeologist. As a boy he attended the Groton School. He was a major in General John Pershing's army in the first world war. After the war he worked for Holt Publishing; he was Robert Frost's editor for New Hampshire, a volume of poetry that would receive the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1923. Along with fellow Harvard alumnus Scofield Thayer, MacVeagh later founded the Dial Press. Among other works, they published e.e. cummings's XLI. MacVeagh was fluent in English, French, German, and Spanish. His training also included Latin and classical Greek. From 1933 to 1941, he served as ambassador to Greece under Franklin Delano Roosevelt's administration. During World War II, he was Roosevelt's representative to Iceland, South Africa, and the Greek and Yugoslavian governments in exile in Egypt. He continued representing the US in Greece under the administration of Harry S Truman. Later under Truman, he became ambassador to Portugal, and, then, Spain. MacVeagh also made archeological excavations under the Acropolis.
