Michael Stanley, from Whiteville, passed away at New Hanover Regional Medical Center after sustaining life-threatening injuries from a motorcycle accident.

He is survived by his wife and daughters, who have been by his side this whole time. He had several “serious fractures and injuries requiring multiple surgeries and an extremely long road to recovery ahead". Sadly, he succumbed to these injuries.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - A New Hanover County firefighter passed away Monday morning due to injuries he sustained in a serious motorcycle crash last week.

The New Hanover County Professional Firefighters Association announced the passing of Engineer Michael Stanley in a Monday evening tweet.

“Michael was such a genuine and influential firefighter, and made a tremendous impact on us all. He will be greatly missed,” the association stated.

County Manager Chris Coudriet also took to Twitter to offer his condolences, calling Stanley “a true public servant.”

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A firefighter injured in a crash one week ago in Brunswick County has died.

According to the New Hanover County Professional Firefighters Association Facebook page, Engineer Michael Stanley succumbed to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident which occurred one week ago.

The NC Highway Patrol said the crash happened just before 3 p.m. on May 4 at NC 130 and Ludlum Road in the Ash community between Shallotte and Whiteville.

Investigators say Stanley was driving his motorcycle east on NC 130, while the driver of a Ford pickup truck, Danny James Smith, was traveling west and turned in front of the motorcycle.

Stanley spent 16 years with the Whiteville Fire Department. Stanley has worked for New Hanover Fire and Rescue since 2019.

First responders from across the county are en route to New Hanover Regional to escort the firefighter back to Columbus County. The procession will pass under a large American flag on Columbus Street in Whiteville this evening.

A procession of fire engines and rescue vehicles honored New Hanover County firefighter Michael Stanley, who passed away Monday morning due to injuries he sustained in a serious motorcycle crash last week.

Highway Patrol troopers led the procession past Station 17 in Wilmington, where Stanley worked as an engineer with New Hanover County Fire and Rescue. The procession continued to Whiteville, where Stanley also worked as a part-time firefighter.

Michael Anthony Stanley, 39, of Whiteville passed away on Monday, May 11, 2020 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Karen Stanley Hendricks.

Michael leaves behind his father, Wayne Stanley (Terri) of Fayetteville; his wife, Angela Evans Stanley, two daughters, Amber Stanley and Hannah Stanley, all of the home; one brother, Stephen Stanley (Amanda) of Whiteville; one sister, Kristina Savage (Chris) of Lake Waccamaw and stepfather, Jim Hendricks.

Michael was a humble, giving, and outgoing young man. He married his high school sweetheart, Angela Evans and together they raised two beautiful girls for the last 19 years.

Michael started as a volunteer firefighter at the age of 17 and worked with the Whiteville Fire Department for 17 years. He currently held a position with the New Hanover County Fire Department. Michael was always a natural born leader and was persistent about putting others’ needs before himself. His selfless attitude, commitment to his family and community have left an eternal impression in this world.

A Drive In Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2020 at 5:00 pm at the Columbus County Fairgrounds in Whiteville with Rev. Cameron McGill officiating. A radio broadcast of the service can be listened to on WTXY 1540 AM or KOOL 103.9 FM.

Due to the recent health concerns, there will not be a visitation following the services and attendees are asked to remain in vehicles for the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Whiteville Fire Dept. Relief Fund (120 E. Columbus St, Whiteville, NC 28472) or the New Hanover County Fire Dept.
