3rd Mate Benedict was the husband of Evelyn Benedict. He served for ten years with the Merchant Marine Corps. While on board a carego ship steaming into the mouth of the Mississippi River he paid the Supreme Sacrifice and was named a hero when the ship was torpedoed three times by a German Submarine, May 12, 1942. Just two weeks before, 3rd Mate Benedict had visited with his family. A Citation of Valour from the board of Commissioneers, Galveston, Texas was awarded with Mariner's Medal.
