Gary passed away at the age of 79 on Thursday, May 7, 2020, with his children by his bedside. He was born on March 13, 1941 in Lansing Michigan to the late Russel and Bernice (Ruggles) Holden. After graduation, Gary began a life long career has an Electrician, ultimately starting a business, “Holden Electric”, with his brother (James) in 1977. He remained involved in the business up until his passing. He married the love of his life Janet Holden (Manchester) on December 3, 1971. They were married for 47 years and enjoyed spending time with their family, traveling and summers at their cottage on Horsehead Lake. Gary had many passions, including Michigan State Spartan Athletics, hunting, bird watching and the outdoors. His “Holden Ice Cream” was known far and wide
as the best homemade ice cream ever, just don’t try to put chocolate syrup on it.
He found great joy in spending time with his grandchildren, watching them grow and teaching them something new. He was always open to new experiences, including water skiing, zip lining, and white water rafting. He never met a stranger and had an uncanny ability to strike up a conversation with anyone. He was quite the jokester and loved playing practical jokes on his family and friends.
He was proceeded in death by his wife Janet, son Ty, brother Richard and both parents. He is survived by his four children, Kim (Kevin) Smith, Kelly (Darin) Selby, Scott (Amy) Holden, Mindy Holden; five grandchildren Caitlyn & Taylor Smith, Parker Holden, Tyler Selby, Kyer Holden; two brothers Thomas Holden and James (Janell) Holden, special nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.
At Gary’s request, cremation will take place with a memorial scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Lung Association in memory of his late wife Janet.
