Governor of Maryland. Born on a plantation in Prince George County, Maryland, he attended St. John's College and graduated from St. Mary's College in 1845. When the Mexican-American War began, Bowie enlisted and became a Private in the United States Army. He fought with distinction at the Battle of Monterrey and eventually received a Captain's commission, promoted by President James K. Polk, as the commanding officer of the Votigeur Regiment. After leaving the army because of illness, he became chairman of the Democratic State Central Committee, a delegate to the Democratic Convention, and a member of the National Democratic Committee from Maryland. In 1864, he was defeated in the election for Lieutenant Governor of Maryland. Elected as Maryland's 34th Governor, he served from 1869 to 1872. He later became president of both the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad and the Baltimore City Passenger Railway Company. A horseracing enthusiast, he was also president of the Maryland Jockey Club and one of the founders of Pimlico Racetrack. He died at his residence in Bowie, Maryland, formerly Huntington, Maryland. He was buried at Fairview Plantation, the same plantation where he was born.
