Henry Marcus Ray Gibbons was born in the Cedar Hill community on Saturday Dec. 8,1917, and departed this life on Saturday March 11,2006 at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va. at the age of 88.
He retired from the Excollo Corporation in Elwood, In., in 1978 and was member of the UAW Local #1384. He served in the infantry in the U.S. Army. He was wounded in France and received the Purple Heart and was held a prisoner of war in Fermany for 11 months. Henry was a member of the Cedar Hill Christian Church and served as an elder for 50 years and received an award for that service.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Louvina Gibbons; son Byrd Raymon Gibbons, his parents Andrew J. and Margaret Fee
Gibbons, eight brothers, Matthew,Grant, John, Herbert, Denver, Clarence, Barto Bee, and Paul Gibbons; four sisters, Cleo VanHuss, Grace Grizzle, Myrtle Marcum and Rhoda Gibbons.
Henry is survived by his son, Charles Ray Gibbons and wife Janice of Jonesville, Va.; three grand-children; Charles David Gibbons of Jonesville; Joseph Byrd Gibbons of Elwood, In., and Sharon Elaine Vaughn of Knoxville; also five great-grand-children, Chandler, Marcus, Lucas and Amos and Natlie.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p. m. today at the Province Funerall Home in Jonesville.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Cedar Hill Christian Church with Jim Myers officiating.
Burial will foll in the Moerlock Cemetery in the Cedar Hill community. Charles DeWitt Bryd VFW Post # 3382 of Kingsport will conduct military honors.
