Graveside funeral services for Mr. Joe Alvin May will be held 3:00 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2020 at the Hughes Chapel Cemetery, near the Beekman Community, with Bro. Jeff Luellen officiating. A time of visitation, with practiced social distancing and limited occupancy guidelines, will be held from 12 noon till 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 11th, at Cox Funeral Home of Bastrop.

Joe Alvin May was born at Monroe, Louisiana on December 3, 1930 to the late Fred Alvin May and Irene Harris May. He passed away on Friday, May 8, 2020 at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, Louisiana following an extended illness. Along with his parents Joe is preceded in death by a grandson, Army Staff Sgt. David "Bubba" LaDart, great-grandson, Derik Beall, and two brothers, Roy Edward "Mutt" May and Willie Ray "Pete" May.

Mr. May was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during the Korean Conflict. During his service he was assigned to the USS Missouri serving as a Quartermaster & Helmsman. It was during his time at the helm that the USS Missouri ran aground in shallow waters. A documentary of the events was part of a Discovery Channel series. Joe was also a valuable employee of 43 years at Riverwood International Paper Mill in West Monroe. He was honored numerous times with perfect attendance awards for his devotion to his job and co-workers. In his spare time Mr. May enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. Most of all Joe will be fondly remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Mr May is survived by his wife of 60 years, Deloris Scroggins "Lois" May; his five children, Alvin Wayne May and wife Renea, Debbie McLean and husband Kenny, Michael Lynn "Mike" May, Ronnie Ray May and finacee' Donna Liegel, and Shelly Renee Martin and Mark Meeks. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Brian May, Scotty May, Monica Beall (Brian Stoddard), Catherine LaDart, Kile Martin, Maggie Martin, Dale Martin, CoraLynn Meeks, and granddaughter-in-law, Halee LaDart; great-grandchildren, Zane Beall, Zoey Beall, Christian Donaldson, Cierstyn Donaldson, and Brayden LaDart; a brother, Freddy Lee May; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of extended family and friends.
