The Rev. Charles Hammond, Presbyterian Minister and Moderator, dies at 86.
Charles Ainley Hammond of Pasadena, CA died peacefully at home on Sunday May 3rd, his wife and daughter at his side.
A third-generation Presbyterian minister, Charles was born on August 7, 1933 in Ashville, North Carolina, the son of George Bradley Hammond and Eleanor Maria Gantz. Raised in Southern California, Charles graduated from South Pasadena High School in 1951, Occidental College in 1955, and Princeton Theological Seminary in 1958.
While in Princeton, Charles met Barbro Laurell from Malmö, Sweden. They married in 1960 and moved to York, Pennsylvania for Reverend Hammond’s first pastoral assignment.
In 1963 Charles returned to California to serve as pastor at Pacific Presbyterian Church in Playa Del Rey followed by Trinity Presbyterian Church in Pasadena. In 1975 Charles made the move from pastor to church governance and administration, becoming an Executive Presbyter in West Lafayette, Indiana.
He played an increasingly visible role in national church polity, and in 1980, Charles was elected Moderator of the 192nd General Assembly of the UPCUSA in Detroit Michigan.
In 1986 Charles accepted the Executive Presbyter role in Philadelphia and in 1998 he began a series of interim preaching positions in New Providence, NJ, Salt Lake City UT, San Luis Obispo, CA, La Jolla CA, and Oceanside CA.
In 2016 Charles and his wife officially retired to Monte Vista Grove Homes in Pasadena California.
Throughout his career, Charles was known as a dynamic and engaging preacher, a compassionate pastor, and an expert in church polity and administration.
Charles is survived by his wife Barbro, son Stig Hammond of Silver Spring, MD, daughter Inga Hammond of Pasadena, CA, daughter-in-law Sharon Glover Hammond, granddaughters Leah Laurell and Maya Christina, and sisters Margaret Hammond Jameson and Mary Hammond Cordero.
